THINGS TO DO
Some of the things to do are listed in
the next few paragraphs. But one of our favorite things
to do is to sit on the back patio, looking out over the
water, and watch the boats go by. Sometimes we boat over
to the Giraglia Hotel, pay a use fee, and spend the late
afternoon swimming in their pool, laying on the cushions
on their beach while waiters ply us with drinks, then watch
the sun go down with San Tropez in the distance. Port Grimaud
is best seen from the water, so we generally travel by small
boat wherever we go--for our morning coffee (at the bakery
in the "Sud" commercial district near our house),
to the beach (we tie up near the quai a few hundred feet
up the river, and step over the wall onto the beach.) Everything in Port Grimaud is accessible by water. During
the high season boat service is available from the main
dock in Port Grimaud to St.Tropez and Ste. Maxime.
You can rent a bike, motorbike, boats of all sizes and
kinds, with our without a crew, in and around Port Grimaud.
If you are going to rent a boat, let us know in advance
so we can move our boat to another location and you can
keep the boat at our dock. It's usually cheaper to go outside
of Port Grimaud for rentals. Times for weekly outdoor markets
are posted in each town.
TENNIS
On the road back to the entrance is the tennis
club, run by tennis pro Alain. You can play and pay by the
hour (not expensive) or take lessons from Alain. He speaks
English well.
BEACHES
In the other direction, about 5-10 minutes
on foot, is the private beach for residents of the "Sud."
Snorkeling is not bad around the rocks, and the water is
well protected and shallow enough for children. The main
beach of Port Grimaud is completely around the other side
of town, at the end of the road that leads to the commercial
center. Right there is the Hotel Giraglia, near the main
beach, and for a small fee you can spend the day in their
pool and private beach. The pool is wonderful, there are
usually fashion models lounging around to watch, and beach
is kept very clean and furnished with comfortable mattresses.
For more excitement go to the Club 55, at one of famous
beaches behind St. Tropez, where the beach, in season, is
full of the beautiful people, and the bathing suit models
try on bathing suits to sell to you on the beach.
TEMPERATURE
During the early Spring and late Fall it can be cool (60-70)
in Port Grimaud-much like California. But in July, August,
late June and September, it gets quite hot in the middle of
the day, although not too humid. It is usually comfortable
in the shade, but not comfortable in the sun, which always
seems brighter her than anywhere else (which is why the famous
artists have always come here). It almost always cools down
at night, but in late June night starts about 10:00 P.M. when
the sun sets. The Saint Tropez discos don't get going until
well after midnight.
